Irkutsk: local gang members arrested for kidnapping and extortion
The kidnappers demanded 2 million rubles ($31,140) from relatives of their victims.
In Irkutsk, 7 members of the criminal group that kidnapped a man and demanded 2 million rubles from his relatives have been arrested. One of the members is female.
The incident took place in the Yubileyniy neighborhood in May. The gangsters blocked a Toyota on the roadway and dragged the driver out of it; the man did not know the criminals. They put him in their car and, threatening with a pistol, drove him to an apartment, where he was held for about a day.
He was beaten and handcuffed. The kidnappers demanded 2 million rubles for his release. Fearing for the man’s life, his family reported the incident to the police and transferred the kidnappers part of the money, promising to give the rest later, Komsomolskaya Pravda reports.
After receiving part of the money, they released the man. Soon, operatives managed to track down the entire criminal group. The detention was carried out with the support of the FSB and SOBR special police.
The arrested people were charged with Kidnapping of a Person Committed by a Group of Persons by Previous Concert, with the use of violence dangerous to life or health, with the use of weapons, and for mercenary reasons and Extortion Committed for the Purpose of Obtaining Property on a Large Scale. Searches in their apartments revealed a large number of firearms.
The defendants testify in a pre-trial detention center. In addition, their involvement in committing similar crimes is being checked.
