Russian exile and Boris Berezovsky’s close ally Glushkov found dead in Britain
The former deputy CEO of Aeroflot and close associate of Boris Berezovsky, Nikolai Glushkov, 68, has passed away.
Nikolai Glushkov, a businessman and former associate of late oligarch Boris Berezovsky, died at the age of 68 in the UK. Daman Kudryavtsev, a media manager and a member of the board of directors of Russian newspaper Vedomosti, posted the news on his Facebook page.
Also, the information was confirmed by Vasily Trunin, an acquaintance of Glushkov: "This is true, but I do not know the details of the place and the date of his death.”
Glushkov was a close associate of Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky. Since 1989, he worked as the first head of the department, and then as the deputy general director of their joint venture LogoVAZ, founded by Berezovsky. In 1991, he started working for AvtoVAZ, and in 1996 became deputy director of Aeroflot.
While working for Aeroflot, he was accused of a large-scale embezzlement in the company. As the investigators found, Berezovsky managed to appoint his close associates on top positions, including Glushkov.
After that, using his connections, Glushkov began withdrawing funds from the accounts of Aeroflot. Most of the airline's foreign exchange earnings were transferred to the Swiss firm Andava (owned by Berezovsky and Glushkov). In addition, Aeroflot regularly took loans from Swiss company Forus (also controlled by Berezovsky). In the period from 1996 to 1999, more than $900 million was transferred through these two firms, a significant amount of the sum was stolen.
In 1999, after the fraud was established, the investigators initiated a criminal case against Berezovsky, Glushkov and another deputy director of Aeroflot, Alexander Krasnenker. However, the Prosecutor's Office changed the status of Berezovsky from a suspect to a witness in the case. Nikolai Glushkov was arrested and put in jail. Nikolai Glushkov was also charged with escaping from the hospital, where he was in custody. The court acquitted Glushkov on charges of embezzlement and money laundering. However, he was sentenced to three years and three months of probation for abuse of office.
Taking into account the time that he had already served, the court released him in a courtroom. The Moscow City Court did not agree with this decision of the Savelovsky court and sent the case for a new trial. In 2006, the Savelovsky Court decided to stop criminal prosecution for the non-return of currency proceeds in connection with the expiration of the statute of limitations. Glushkov was sentenced to two years of a suspended sentence under the other articles. In 2010, Glushkov received political asylum in the UK. Meanwhile, a criminal case was initiated against him in Russia. In March 2017, he was sentenced to eight years in prison in absentia for stealing $123 million from Aeroflot in Moscow.

The clampdown on the ‘Baltic laundromat’ hasn’t destroyed the global cash-out market. ‘Black cash’ is still laundered at the state level. Apparently, the main money laundering hub is currently located in a small Central Asian country – Kyrgyzstan. Ethnic criminal groups operating in Russia, Europe, and Central Asia use it to legalize their shady proceeds. Revenues generated by the illegal business are estimated at $500 million per year. However, it is impossible to covertly launder money on a global scale. Is the national political establishment involved in the criminal schemes?
