Three people were killed and three more were left injured in an explosion that occurred last night in an abandoned house in the town of Quargnento (Province of Alessandria) in northern Italy, RaiNews24 reported on Tuesday, citing the local fire service.

All the victims were firefighters who arrived at the scene at about two in the morning. Two more firefighters and one police officer, who were nearby, got injuries as well. Currently, they all are in hospital and the condition of the wounded persons does not cause concern of doctors.

Law enforcement officials are trying to establish the causes of the explosion. According to the original theory, it could have been a gas leak or consequences of the fire. However, the press learnt from sources at the provincial police department that the investigators say it might have been arson.
