Russian suspected of supporting runaway Italian drug lord arrested in Uruguay
He was arrested for 90 days.
The court arrested a citizen of Russia who is suspected of hiding data on the escape of Italian drug lord Rocco Morabito. RIA Novosti reports.
Two citizens of the Russian Federation detained within this case remained at large, but the investigation against them continues. It is noted that one of them is a woman.
“Now the implementation of the preventive measure will begin, there are results of the examination, which are not yet complete, and the idea is to monitor the development of this case for about a month,” Russian lawyer Paola Vitale said.
Consular access to the detained Russians was obtained, and the embassy took the situation under control. It became known that the detainees have been living with a residence permit in Uruguay for several years.
Italian mafia Rocco Morabito, one of the bosses of the Calabrian mafia Ndrangheta, escaped from the Uruguayan prison in late June, where he was serving a sentence for drug trafficking. He is considered the most wanted member of the Ndrangheta. Morabito has been hiding from arrest for more than 20 years and was arrested in Uruguay only in 2017. Since then, he has been waiting for extradition to Italy. It is believed that Ndrangheta controls up to 80 percent of drug trafficking in the EU.
