Criminal court of Kuwait of the first instance has sentenced a Russian Maria Lazareva to 15 years in prison and a major fine on suspicion of laundering of public funds allocated for The Port Fund. Besides that, Lazareva has been sentenced to carry out hard labour.

“She has to give back 719 thousand Kuwait dinars (around $2.4 million) and pay a fine worth of 2.138 Kuwait dinars (more than $7 million) - along with other defendants in the case. As soon as her term is over, she’s going to be deported from the country,” RIA Novosti quotes the court order.

The Russian is going to appeal the decision through the appeal court.

Lazareva was convicted in spring, 2018, for embezzlement of funds of the Kuwait’s port authority. Later, the charges were dismissed, but $65 million were demanded for the release. She was released on June 13, when the bail was cut to a million of Kuwait dinars ($3.29 million).
