Mexican court sentences Russian Makeev to 37.5 years in prison
He will also have to pay a hefty fine.
Russian Alexey Makeev, accused of murder in Mexico, was sentenced to 37.5 years in prison and paid damages to the family of the deceased at 405 thousand pesos (about 22 thousand dollars), RIA Novosti reports with reference to the state Attorney’s Office of Quintana Roo. Also, he will have to pay a fine of 190.1 thousand pesos (about 10 thousand dollars).
The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Mexico reported that his fundamental rights were respected during the trial. Russian diplomats also noted that he has the right to the deportation to continue doing his sentence in Russia, but so far the Russian has not made such a request.
In May 2017, several hundred people came to the house of a Russian in Mexican Cancun, outraged by his behavior. The reason for the conflict was videos in which Makeev insulted the citizens of a Latin American country, including women and children. Makeev got a head injury, and one Mexican was killed. Russian lawyers insist that he acted within the framework of the self-defense.
