Kiev: unknown person open fire after threats to bomb bridge

Investigators qualified the incident as preparation for a terrorist attack.

An unknown man made several shots and threatened to bomb the Metro bridge across the Dnieper River in Kiev. A remote control with a button was noticed in the man’s hand. Snipers and armored personnel carriers drove up to the bridge. The police blocked traffic, Interfax reports, citing the speaker of the National Police of Ukraine, Yaroslav Trakalo.

“Traffic of cars and trains on the bridge is blocked. Investigators of the metropolitan police qualify the incident as preparation for a terrorist act,” Kiev Police Chief Andrey Kryshchenko said.

The press service of the Kiev metro reported that they had received an anonymous call about the bomb laid in the site from the Darnitsa station to the Khreshchatyk station of Svyatoshino-Brovarskaya (M1). Specialists inspect the specified location.

According to TheBabel, the shooter on the bridge is Crimean Alexey Belko, 42, who in June was found guilty of unauthorized abandonment of a military unit. As a punishment, the court ruled on a one-week arrest with detention in a guardhouse. Then, 1 kg of explosives and 88 rounds of ammunition were seized from Belko, who claimed that he found them “in a safe in a village in the Chernihiv Region,” the Ukrainian edition writes.
