Georgia wants direct flights to Russia to resume as soon as possible. This was announced by Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani, RIA Novosti reports.

According to him, Tbilisi welcomes the acceleration of this process, as relations between peoples, as well as tourism, help de-escalation.

October 1, Georgian Prime Minister Georgy Gakharia said Tbilisi is in favor of normalizing relations with Russia and resuming flights. At the same time, he noted that all steps in this direction will be taken with cold head and completely out of pragmatic considerations.

In September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov admitted the possibility of restoring air links with Georgia. “We will cancel this measure when the situation normalizes and when the Georgian leadership realizes the need to suppress such manifestations.”

Relations between Russia and Georgia escalated at the end of June. Thousands of protests broke out in Tbilisi, the reason for which was the participation of the Russian delegation in the session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, during which State Duma deputy Sergey Gavrilov took the chair of Speaker of the Georgian Parliament. After that, Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to discontinue direct flights between the countries from July 8.
