Former boxing champ Pernell Whitaker dies after being hit by car

Olympic champ Pernell Whitaker died in a traffic accident, ESPN reports. The former boxer was hit by a car on Sunday evening in the American city of Virginia Beach. The man, 55, died at the spot.
Virginia State Police began investigating the incident with the death of Whitaker. It is noted that the driver who rammed a pedestrian remained at the scene of an accident.
Whitaker was the Los Angeles champion of the 1984 Olympics in the lightweight division. He became a champion in four weight categories. His boxing career ended in 2001, and five years later he was included in the International Boxing Glory Hall.
The American athlete was considered one of the best boxers in history who used the defensive fighting style. He spent 40 fights in the ring, in which he scored 35 victories and four defeats with one draw.
