EU supports Ukraine’s plan to resolve conflict in Donbass

The head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, commented on Kiev’s proposals for resolving the conflict in the Donbass, following the talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Vadim Pristayko.

"We received from him a fairly comprehensive, and I would even say, a satisfactory picture of the plans that the government and the administration have for reforms, as well as how to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine,” she told reporters after the talks.

Mogherini did not specify the details of the Ukrainian plan. She noted that the EU has recently been observing “positive development” in this area and “wants to support” the process.

In turn, Pristayko told the reporters that Europe should strengthen sanctions against Russia. “Sanctions are the measures that Europe applies to the Russian Federation. The stronger the sanctions, the better the Russian Federation understands what we mean – Ukraine and the EU,” the minister said, answering a question about European pressure on Russia.

Earlier, Pristayko said that he intends to urge European partners to “wear down” Russia on the issue of resolving the conflict in the Donbass. A source on the sidelines of the meeting, however, explained that the discussions were fact-finding and did not imply any statements or decisions.
