Convicted Colombian ex-senator Aida Merlano escapes through hospital window
She climbed out of a window, got down on a rope and drove off on a motorcycle with an unidentified man in a food delivery uniform.
Former Colombian Senator Aida Merlano fled custody during a visit to a dentist. The woman had been sentenced to 15 years in prison for corruption, vote buying and illegal possession of weapons, reported the National Institute of Correctional and Penitentiary Institutions on Twitter.
The woman was serving her sentence in the El Buen Pastor women's prison. She was taken to a dentist in La Sabana clinic where climbed out of a window, got down on a rope and drove off on a motorcycle with an unidentified man in a food delivery uniform.
The dentist, whose office was the place the convict escaped from, also disappeared.
Law enforcement officers are looking for the ex-senator. The authorities offered 10 million pesos for help in capturing the prisoner.
The woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison after a search in 2018, when it turned out that Merlano’s campaign managers were buying votes and exceeded the allowed spending limit. After the imprisonment, the ex-senator tried to commit suicide, according to some reports.
