Connection between condemned Butina and State Dept discovered
The Russian had known Under Secretary of State of the U.S. Andrea Thompson.
Russian Maria Butina condemned in the United States had had close ties with Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs Andrea Thompson and her husband. Butina’s boyfriend Paul Erikson had introduced her to the couple, reports The Washington Post with reference to its own sources.
With that, Butina and Erikson had been invited to Thompson and her husband’s wedding. The Russian’s boyfriend had even been the ceremony’s host. Thompson refused to comment on the situation. She had not reported about her friendship with Erikson either to the Congress or to the senior executives when she was being appointed, The Washington Post notes.
Nevertheless, the fact that Thompson did not inform her executives of her friendship with Butina and Erikson is not a crime. However, at the present time, the United States Congress is going to carry out an investigation into ties the Under Secretary of State had, as these reports on Thompson pose a question on her relation to all the important information.
The CrimeRussia reported Butina had been detained in 2018. In April, this year, she was condemned and found guilty of “conspiracy for the purpose of illegal work for Russia’s government.” By the time, she had spent 9 months in custody. Butina is expected to be released in November. After that, she will be deported from the U.S.
Presumably, it concerns the US response to Ukraine’s help in the investigation against Joseph Biden, Trump’s main rival in the 2020 presidential election, who allegedly was in collusion with Kiev during the previous campaign.
