Catalan leader calls for new vote on independence
Quim Torra also noted that the draft constitution of Catalonia will be proposed in the spring of 2020.
The head of the government of Catalonia, Quim Torra, said that a new referendum on the region’s independence has to be held in his Thursday speech for the Parliament of Catalonia.
"If ballot boxes got us to prison for 100 years, the solution is obvious: we need to put the ballot boxes again and vote for self-determination," he said. Torra emphasized that "the trial will not prevent the Catalonian leader from promoting the initiatives that relate to the region’s right to self-determination."
"In the spring of 2020, during the constituent debate, there will be an opportunity to support the proposals that will serve as a guide for the republican constitution," Torra said. “In my speech before the approval [by the head of the regional government], I said that during the term, I would be moving towards a constitution, and most members of parliament supported me.” “I’m going to advocate for the right to self-determination that should be ensured by the end of this term,” he assured.
On Wednesday, the Spanish Constitutional Court (CC) warned Torra that violating court orders related to the right to self-determination is a felony.
