Video of detention of Boeing hijacker in Khanty-Mansiysk appears on Web
The Ural Transport Prosecutor took the investigation into the criminal case under his direct control.
A video of the detention of Pavel Shapovalov, 41, who captured an Aeroflot aircraft in Surgut, was published on the Web. The aircraft was flying to Moscow, but landed in Khanty-Mansiysk, where the security forces took the perpetrator. According to unofficial data, the hijacker demanded to fly the Boeing to Afghanistan.
There were 69 passengers aboard the Boeing, no one was hurt. The officers did not find any weapons on Shapovalov.
The investigating bodies initiated a criminal case of hijacking an aircraft with the use of violence. The Ural Transport Prosecutor took the investigation into the criminal case under his direct control. Shapovalov faces up to 12 years in prison. Previously, he was convicted of damaging property.
Mass protest rallies have been taking place in Moscow on a regular basis since the beginning of this summer. People are protesting for lots of different reasons. However, the reaction of the law enforcement authorities is always the same: repression. What is the reason behind the brutality shown during the dispersion of mass rallies? A conscious intimidation policy or incompetence of law enforcement functionaries escalating the violence and unable to imagine the potential consequences of this?
