The Mogoytuysky District Court of Transbaikal has began hearing a case against police officers Bator Yamadaev and Ayur Badmaev accused of torturing suspects, according to Radio Svoboda.

The officers arrested Anatoly Sokolov and Viktoria Barbybaeva for suspected theft of 10 thousand rubles ($168) worth of household chemicals in the Tsugol village during last winter holidays, Radio Svoboda reports. The young people pleaded not guilty; the officers decided to apply forbidden interrogation techniques to them.

They brutally beat the young man who ended up in hospital with a broken back, a concussion, and other injuries afterwards. However, the officers failed to beat Sokolov into confession. Yet, they managed to break Viktoria who they kicked in the gut when interviewing and then threw in a cell and refuse her any water or food, and even bathroom. Barbybaeva wrote a confession when the officers began threatening to beat her anew. In addition, she testified against Sokolov.

Viktoria had been diagnosed with mild intellectual disability when she was a little child, according to Viktoria’s mother Oksana Golovach. Viktoria studied at type 8 special school. "Vika [Viktoria] was 18 years old and studied in 8th grade when arrested. She had to leave the school." Oksana claimed she was offered money to not testify against the officers.

Anatoly Sokolov’s family was allegedly offered money for treatment by family one of the officers. However, they received no money, according to Anatoly’s uncle. It is worth mentioned the uncle is the owner of the shop the chemicals were stolen from. The man emphasized thief(s) remain at large.
