The athlete has been charged with criminal conspiracy in the case against Homestead Infrastructure Development.
The Indian police have launched an investigation into an alleged fraud with real estate with the involvement of famous Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, according to the Times of India.
The tennis star was charged with criminal conspiracy in the case against Homestead Infrastructure Development. A complaint was filed against the company with the tennis player indicated as one of the company's officials, along with Homestead Infrastructure Maintenance and Homestead Arabic Homes.
The suit against Sharapova is about deceived real estate investors in India. Sharapova is known to have traveled to India in 2012 to participate in the launch of a luxury housing project called Ballet by Sharapova. The future owners were promised beautiful apartments, a tennis academy, their own club and a helipad. The project was to be completed by 2016. However, as soon as the customers paid their hefty sums before the construction was completed, the project got suspended. The customers have been left without the real estate they had purchased, and apparently, the works are not to resume any time soon.
The investigation into the alleged fraud remains ongoing. Indian law enforcement agencies have not commented on the situation yet and neither has the tennis player.
