Roskomnadzor wants Telegram removed from App Store and Google Play

Roskomnadzor started the procedure of Telegram blocking on the afternoon of April 16.

The Russian media censor is going to order App Store and Google Play to remove the Telegram messenger, TASS quoted Roskomnadzor head Alexander Zharov as saying.

According to him, Roskomnadzor will also watch how telecommunications carriers are following the blocking requirements, RIA Novosti said. "We are not watching the users, however" Zharov said.

The Tagansky Court ruled to immediately block Telegram since the messenger refused to hand over its encryption keys to the special services on April 13. That was when the web version of the messenger was added to the prohibited websites list. The decision was made on the suit that Roskomnadzor filed on April 6.

Roskomnadzor announced it started the blocking procedure on the afternoon of April 16. Telegram’s domain names and IP addresses will be entered in the register of blocked websites; telecom providers will also be notified the access to Telegram should be restricted.
