Rosatom names people killed in Arkhangelsk training ground explosion

The accident happened during tests on the offshore platform of a "new special product".

The names and photographs of five Rosatom employees who died during the test of the “new special product” have been made public. 200 thousand rubles will be paid to their families, and 100 thousand rubles to three victims, RBC reports. The tragedy was a result of fire during a test of a liquid propulsion system.

The Sarov Nuclear Center said that preparations for the tests had taken about a year. The purpose of the scientists was "to create small-sized energy sources using radioactive fissile materials." “It’s a nuclear battery, in simple terms,” Fontanka quotes a representative of the nuclear center as saying.

The explosion occurred 30 km off Severodvinsk on an offshore platform. The sensors recorded a short-term increase in the background radiation.

The following people died as a result of the incident: Alexey Vyushin (43 years old), Evgeny Korataev (50 years old), Vyacheslav Lipshev (40 years old), Sergey Pichugin (46 years old) and Vladislav Yanovsky (71 years old). They were posthumously awarded the Orders of Courage.
