Rallies and confrontations with police. Ethnic conflict stopped in Kabardino-Balkaria
The Investigative Committee of Russia launched preliminary inquiries into events on September 18-19 in settlement of Kendelen.
According to the local media, last night in Kabardino-Balkaria went by safely. It is to be recalled that the day before, an ethnic conflict erupted there. There is no official information about the accident on the website of MIA’s main office of the Republic and Government and head of Kabardino-Balkaria resources. However, it is known that the Investigative Committee in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria launched preliminary inquiries into events on September 18-19 in settlement of Kendelen.
Local media reports about scores of detainees in various localities after the popular unrest erupted in the Republic. Later, It was learned that the law enforcement agencies released the detainees who had been detained at the central square in the city of Nalchik.
It is to be recalled that on September 18, locals clashed with security forces in settlement of Kendelen which is situated on the way to Mount Elbrus. As was reported by the Investigative Committee in Kabardino-Balkaria, horseback riding tour (in honour of 310 years after the Kanzhal battle) of participants were stopped on their way to the settlement of Kendelen. The Kabardian horsemen were going to make the ascent. However, the Circassian youth having learnt that Balkarians did not allow the horsemen in the settlement went there to handle the situation. As a result, they resorted to clashes and riots. Kabardino-Balkaria’s MIA officers and the National Guard Forces Command were summoned to the settlement to prevent confrontation.
It is noted that during clashes, the locals refused the orders of the police and Federal National Guard Troops Service and used force to confront them in an attempt to provoke a confrontation. Moreover, they posted unreliable information on social networks and incited hatred and enmity.
The next day, clashes with law enforcement erupted in the neighboring villages, as well. The video of the conflicts is being spread on social networks. The government security services are blocking the roads, firing many rounds of ammunition into the air and using tear-gas. There is no official information about the victims.
The rally organized by Kabardino-Balkar social organization Khabze in Nalchik ended the previous night after the conversation with the Minister on Nationalities Anzor Kurashinov.
Previously, in 2008, citizens of Kendelen refused to allow participants of a horseback riding tour in honor of 310 years after the Kanzhal battle. They went to rallies under the slogan: There was no Kanzhal battle! and We won’t let to stake our land! Balkarians believe that the Kanzhal territory is their historic land and the events with national coloration organized by other nations is an encroachment on their territory.
The Kanzhal battle is a battle that happened at night in 1708 when the Circassians defeated Crimean Kaplan Giray Han’s forces consisting of Turks and Crimean Tatars. In 2013, Russian Institute for the History noted that the Kanzhal battle is essential in the nation's history of Kabardians, Balkarians and Ossetians.
