Prosecutor General's Office finds human rights defender Ponomaryov’s arrest for repost legal
The Office carried out a check after the meeting of President Putin and members of the Human Rights Council.
The Prosecutor General's Office has found the administrative arrest of 77-year-old human rights defender Lev Ponomaryov for a repost calling for a support of the campaign in defense of the defendants in the Novoe Velichiye case legal, since the defendant’s personal page has many subscribers, and earlier Ponomaryov had already been prosecuted for such an offense. This is reported on the supervisory body's website.
“The holding of a public event announced by the organizers was suggested along a different route, of which Ponomaryov, who is indicated in the application for holding the public event as its organizer, was well aware,” the message says.
It is noteworthy that for the first time, on July 31, the human rights activist was found guilty of violating the order of organizing a public event for the same message, but on a different social network.
The Prosecutor General's Office has carried out the check on instructions from the Russian President Vladimir Putin. Members of the Human Rights Council asked the country’s leader to intervene on December 11.
