Prosecuted Kemerovo region EMERCOM head submits his resignation
Aleksandr Mamontov has handed in his resignation.
Head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Main Directorate in the Kemerovo region Aleksandr Mamontov, accused of embezzlement and negligence as part of the Zimnyaya Vishnya fire case, has handed in his resignation, as reported by a representative of the Prosecutor's Office during the court session on Saturday, at which the question of electing a measure of restraint for the official was addressed.
According to the investigation, Mamontov, as well as Head of the Department for Supervision of Activities and Preventive Work of the cities of Kemerovo, Berezovsky and Kemerovo district Grigory Terentyev had failed to check the fire safety standards at the mall twice. In addition, the investigators found that Mamontov and his unidentified accomplices had withdrawn about 1.8 million ($24,114) budget funds.
The fire at the mall occurred on March 25, claiming the lives of 60 people.
Major general Igor Vasiliev, Head of the Engineering Support Service of the Federal Protection Service (FPS), and lieutenant general Ulitin subordinate to him are currently in the middle of a scandal. However, it is unlikely that they lose their posts. Reportedly, the two generals are just the tip of the huge corruption iceberg in the law enforcement structures. This is not the first embezzlement episode in their careers.
