New video of prisoner beating in Yaroslavl colony appears
The Federal Penitentiary Service has initiated a service check into the incident.
Novaya Gazeta has posted another video with tortures in the Yaroslavl colony No. 1. The footage from a colony guard's bodycam was provided by rights defenders from the Obshchestvenny Verdikt fund.
In the video, guards are beating a detainee, Andrey Ivanov, who complained that he was not given toilet paper from his personal belongings. Another convict, Dzhoshgun Akhmediya Abdulaev, tries to stand up for him, but the guards beat him with batons.
After the beating, duty assistant to the head of the colony, Igor Zabodalov, reported to the regional Federal Penitentiary Service Directorate. “The doctor has taken at look at them, their working capacity not impaired, everything is fine. Well, what’s the problem? Is there any problem?” Zabodalov said.
After that, he discussed the beating with his colleagues. “They’re doing just fine. Well, more like 5 out of 10, but anyway. It was 9 out of 10 yesterday,” he said. Zabodalov's colleague noted that Abdulaev was to be released soon. The colony head assistant said that “there were guys with their asses swelling blue, and they managed.”
According to Novaya Gazeta, the video was made in February 2016.
The Federal Penitentiary Service reported that a service check was scheduled after the video went viral.
Previously, Novaya Gazeta had already posted videos of tortures in the Yaroslavl correctional camp No. 1. After a video was published last summer, a criminal case of Exceeding Official Powers (part 3 of Art. 286 of the Russian Criminal Code) was initiated, the defendants in which were 15 employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service.
