Kemerovo police chief to meet Podgorny villagers demanding Romani eviction

The diaspora is being guarded by special forces after two major fights took place in the village and the neighboring settlement.

The head of the Central Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Kemerovo Region, Lieutenant General Gennady Ivanov, is planning a visit to Podgornoye on August 23, after a mass brawl of villagers with their Roma neighbors. On the night of August 22, they came to the neighboring settlement of Nikitskoye and started another brawl with the nomadic people there, according to Baza.

The conflict began allegedly because of Roma men harassed local women. “Then our guys wanted to burn them, so they threw bottles of gasoline at their windows,” a local woman told Taiga.info. Two defenders received stab wounds, which escalated into a mass brawl involving more than a hundred people.

The suspect in the stabbing has been detained and special forces were sent to Podgornoye to maintain public order. The investigating authorities have opened two criminal cases. However, this did not suit the locals, who demanded the eviction of all 25 Romani, and they got into a fight with them in Nikitskoye at night. The fighters were detained in the morning.
