Kaliningrad jail guards beat prisoners during search
A criminal case on abuse of authority was opened against the staff of Colony No. 7.
The Investigation Directorate of the Investigative Committee for the Kaliningrad Region initiated a criminal case on the abuse of authority (item (a), part 3 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code) against employees of the correctional colony No. 7, reported the press service of the local Investigative Committee.
According to the investigation, the colony staff beat eight convicts in the search room between January and October 2017. Currently, the investigators are establishing the suspects.
This has not been the only instance when prisoners in this colony were tortured. In 2013, one of the inmates posted an appeal on the website Gulagu.net (Lit. “No to Gulag”), where he opened up about beatings. In 2017, the Public Monitoring Commission published another torture report.
In October 2015, a criminal case on abuse of authority was opened against the Deputy Chief of the Colony No. 7. According to the investigation, he forced prisoners to build a house for him in the village of Znamensk, Gvardeisky district, and also to work on the adjacent property.
The Legal Initiative researcher Saida Sirazhudinova at the All-Russian Civil Forum asked the representative of the mufti of Chechnya about the "honor killings" in Caucasus. And soon after that, she found herself under surveillance.
