Investigative Committee initiates proceedings against judges and prosecutors of Lithuania
The investigation believes that Lithuanian officials persecute the Russians illegally.
The Investigative Committee of Russia initiated criminal proceedings against judges and prosecutors of Lithuania. They were accused of persecuting former Soviet servicemen that took part in January Events (1991). This is reported on the website of the Russian department.
It is specified that officials of the Prosecutor General's Office and the court of the Baltic Republic are accused. They are charged with part 2 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - Knowingly Bringing an Innocent Person to Criminal Liability.
Russian investigators say that since 2006, the authorities of Lithuania have illegally pursued about 60 former Soviet servicemen, most of whom are Russian citizens.
Lithuania, in turn, accuses the former military of crimes committed during January Events (1991). As a result of Soviet military actions, 14 civilians were killed, and 702 were injured.
