Fourth defendant in treason case dealt with payment services for porn sites

The fourth defendant in the criminal case of high treason committed by the FSB Information Security Center officers Sergey Mikhailov and Dmitry Dokuchaev, whose name remained unknown for a long time, is associated with the high-profile investigation into DDoS-attack on Assist payment system in July 2010.

Kommersant has provided the details about Georgy Fomchenkov, whose name had been earlier revealed by Novaya Gazeta.

According to the publication's source, Fomchenkov had been previously engaged in business on the Internet. In particular, in early 2000, he was involved in the work of payment services used by webmasters of pornographic sites, spammers, and online pharmaceutics sellers.

They did not last long due to the content's nature, the source notes, so the services were replaced by one another. Active in 2003, whitebill.com was one of them. There is information about ‘Gosha the whitebill owner’ in the archives of crutop.nu forum, administrated by the founder of Chronopay payment system Pavel Vrublevsky.

Pavel Vrublevsky

As Kommersant says, Vrublevsky used to known Georgy Fomchenkov. It is noteworthy that he was also linked to other defendants in the treason case, namely Mikhailov and Dokuchaev. Both of them were involved in the investigation of the criminal case on DDoS-attack on Assist payment system in July 2010, which resulted in the sale of electronic tickets for Aeroflot flights being not available for several days. Another person, detained in the case of high treason, namely Kaspersky Lab employee Ruslan Stoyanov, took part in the investigation above as a specialist for technical expertise.

According to Vrublevsky, who was sentenced for 2.5 years for the organization of the DDoS-attack on Assist in 2013, Fomchenkov also participated in the investigation. As Vrublevsky told Kommersant, in 2010, he and Chronopay team informed the law enforcement agencies about Sergey Mikhailov and Ruslan Stoyanov's possible illegal activity in favor of the Americans. This, in his words, led to his prosecution in the attack on Assist by the persons suspected of treason.

This information is indirectly confirmed by the earlier statement of Kaspersky Lab's press service. The company explained that the investigation in respect of Ruslan Stoyanov is connected to his activities before 2012, that is, before he joined Kaspersky Lab.
