Fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov awarded Dagestani national hero
This is the highest social award of the republic, which is granted for a significant contribution to the solution of socio-economic, spiritual, moral and cultural development issues.
MMA fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, who recently defended his UFC lightweight champion title in a fight vs. Irishman Conor McGregor will be granted the status of Dagestani national hero in his homeland.
TASS quotes chairman of the regional fund for the patriotic education of youth and coordinator of the Native Dagestan public movement Hasanguseyn Abdulzhelilov.
"Khabib Nurmagomedov is awarded the status of Dagestani national hero for a special contribution to the development of domestic sports and winning the UFC champion belt," he added. “The decision on awarding has already been made, shortly he will get a golden star with an eagle," said the agency interlocutor.
Abdulzhelilov explained that this is the highest social award of the republic, which is granted for a significant contribution to the solution of socio-economic, spiritual, moral and cultural development issues.
It was established more than ten years ago, and about 20 people got it. Among those awarded are entrepreneur Suleyman Kerimov, Olympic wrestling champion Buvaysar Saytiev, KGB General Omar Murtazaliyev, as well as politician and public figure Gamzat Gamzatov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin personally congratulated Khabib Nurmagomedov on his victory over Irishman Conor McGregor. The head of state met with the athlete on Wednesday after the "Russia – Country of Sports" forum.
According to TASS, father of the wrestler Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov also took part in the meeting.
“Congratulations,” Putin said, welcoming the winner.
He also suggested Khabib to ask the athlete's father not to punish him too severely for the scandalous brawl after the fight. “I’ll ask dad not to punish him severely,” the head of state joked.
According to him, Nurmagomedov achieved the main task – he won convincingly. Putin also drew attention to the fact that sporting ideals should be more important than earnings.
“I want to express the hope that after all the ideals of sport – they will be above everything else – above salaries and commercials. I mean, primarily, the team of your rivals. And that in the end, the way to normal communication, male friendship, sports will be found,” the news agency quotes Putin.
The President also spoke about Nurmagomedov’s attack on McGregor’s sparring partner after the end of the fight.
“If we are attacked from the outside, not only you, we could all jump in such a way … there could be hell to pay. But it’s better not to reach that stage,” Putin stated.
