Death toll in breaking of illegal dam in Krasnoyarsk region rises to 13 people

Investigators give preliminary version of the disaster.

The death toll during the breakthrough of the dam in the Krasnoyarsk region reached 13 people, EMERCOM press service reports.

According to TASS, 13 people are reported missing, and 19 people injured due to the incident.

The dam broke under the Shchetinkino settlement on a gold mining artel at 6 a.m. local time (2 a.m. MSK). A stream of water of enormous force fell on the workers’ trailers. The ICR reports that the exact number of mine workers is still unknown, but about 80 people could be there. In the early morning, the workers found themselves in a stream of ice water at sub-zero temperatures. The search and rescue operation of the Ministry of Emergency Situations continues.

According to the preliminary information, the catastrophe occurred due to “wear of the dam body.”

Region Governor Alexander Uss, Head of the regional MIA Main Directorate Alexander Rechitsky, Regional Prosecutor Mikhail Savchin, and Acting Head of the regional ICR Main Investigations Directorate Aleksey Eremin have gone to the scene.

At the same time, Uss said: “According to the preliminary information, it is not registered as a hydraulic structure. The dam is about 5-meter high.” Thus, the facility was illegally built.

The region head explained that the workers’ trailers were below the reservoir’s level.

A criminal case under Violation of Safety Rules in Mining, Building, and Other Activities (part 3 of Art. 216 of the Russian Criminal Code) has been initiated into the accident.
