Dear teachers: millionaires of main universities of Russia
Everyone knows of low salaries of teachers. However in educational institutions there is also a place for ultrahigh income. Pedagogics in Russia became the sphere of social despair long ago. Low salaries, the stigma attached to a profession as such and other problems. Nevertheless this island of bad luck has some magnificent oases of wellbeing. And those are not officials of the Ministry of Education and Science or teachers who listened to the recommendation to go to business. It appears, that even within the walls of native higher education institutions it is possible to prosper.
For getting into the list of the teaching millionaires it is only necessary to head a higher educational institution (HEI). Top Higher Education Institution of Moscow and St. Petersburg still remain the most profitable. This year top three was constituted by the All-Russian Academy of Foreign Trade (ARAFT), RANEPA and National mineral and raw university Gorny. The comprehensive income of rectors of this HEI in 2015 constituted 376,1 million rubles. But it is somehow awkward to call this income a salary from teaching and scientific activities.
Closest to education from this three there was a rector of ARAFT Sergey Sinelnikov-Murylev who earned 45,6 million rubles last year. In addition to the rector's position in ARAFT, at the same time holds posts of vice rector of RANEPA and research supervisor of institute of Gaidar. Besides, last year Sinelnikov-Murylev was a member of the supervisory board of Sberbank. All these posts allowed Sergey Sinelnikov-Murylev to purchase two apartments of more than 100 sq.m. and a whole collection of parcels of land and cars arranged to his spouse.
The second place in the list of the richest rectors goes to rector of a RANEPA (Moscow) Vladimir Mau with 53,7 million rubles declared for 2015. Unlike his colleague from ARAFT Mau earns few in the university administration. Together with the stimulating payments Mau's salary constituted 9,2 million rubles. In Mau's arsenal also membership in board of directors of Gazprom and supervisory board of Sberbank. Also real estate which is owned by the rector of RANEPA impresses: five apartments from 62 to 241 sq.m. and parcel of land of 800 sq.m. One more site on 6,5 thousand sq.m., house of 363,8 sq.m. and apartment of 76,6 sq.m. appear in property of his spouse.
The first place in this rating already for several years holds rector of the National mineral and raw university Gorny Vladimir Litvinenko. Last year Litvinenko earned 277,2 million rubles. It is worth noticing the Gorny itself holds not the first place in the rating of the Russian Higher Education Institutions. A house, three apartments and a parcel of land of 5,9 thousand sq.m. are applied to annual earnings of the successful rector. The heavy burden of property on other real estate of a family of Litvinenko is born by the rector's spouse. And this is not all property of a family of Vladimir Litvinenko holding a modest 177th place in the rating of the richest businessmen of Russia. The quite good share in the authorized capital of PhosAgro (14,54%) and remarkable enterprise in the handling of property of university allow Litvinenko to be called a businessman. Thus DP published large-scale investigation telling how the real estate of the Gorny University worth 7 billion rubles went over to structures, affiliated with Litvinenko.
Science vs business
Some reactors of higher educational institutions distinguished by the fact that they have doubled and even tripled their money in the past year. And here ahead of the planet there are well familiar faces - Litvinenko, Mau, Sinelnikov-Murylev. Litvinenko, in particular, grew rich more, than three times in comparison with 2014. Rectors of the Baumanka Anatoly Aleksandrov and of the Moscow State Medical University n.a. Sechenov Petr Glybochko also improved their financial positions. The first earned 18,3 million rubles last year and the second - 16,4 million rubles. In 2014 their income amounted 7,1 million rubles and 7,4 million rubles respectively.
Unexpected capital gain is also demonstrated by heads of less noticeable universities. This is Evgeny Rybnov (the St. Petersburg state architectural and construction university) with the income of 19,7 million rubles against 6,4 million rubles in 2014, rector of the Russian Economic University n. a. Plekhanov Victor Grishin who almost doubled his income from 13 to 24 million rubles for the considered period and rector of the Novosibirsk national research state university (NNRSU) Mikhail Fedoruk. Head of the NNRSU increased his wealth by 18,4 million rubles last year (in 2014 Fedoruk's income constituted 12 million rubles). In terms of real estate ownership all three certainly lose to heads of top higher education institutions and look poor on their background.
However some heads of educational institutions show indestructible stability of the official income. Those are first vice rector of the National Research University - Higher School of Economics (HSE) Leonid Gokhberg and Nikolay Kropachev (the St.Petersburg State University). Gokhberg earned 35,6 million rubles last year, which is only 200 thousand rubles less than the amount of 2014. Besides, taking into account property of his spouse Gokhberg owns five apartments, an apartment house, a parcel of land of more than 1,7 thousand sq.m. and an Audi A8 car.
Nikolay Kropachev's income also shows negative dynamics - last year the rector of the St.Petersburg State University earned 23,2 million rubles that is exactly 2 million less, than in the 2014. It is remarkable that having impressive annual earnings, Kropachev does not own any real estate, and his only relative in the declaration is his daughter, who also does not own anything. It is unclear in where Nikolay Kropachev invests his immodest income. However, we wrote about “official income” on purpose. In relation to Nikolay Kropachev this phrase arises by itself.
The St.Petersburg State University, which is under a sensitive management of Kropachev actively prepares for moving to new buildings near Gatchina. Willing to change of places took control of a management of the higher education institution right after long-term and multi-billion restoration of the buildings occupied by university at the moment. Among them there is a palace and park ensemble Mikhaylovskaya dacha in Petrodvorets (the higher school of management of the St.Petersburg State University), building of Twelve boards ( tender No. 1, tender No. 2), Petr the Second palace where the philological faculty and some other objects are located. Yet lasting restoration of Mikhaylovskaya dacha cost to the budget more, than 9 billion rubles ( tender No. 1, tender No. 2). It is quite possible that with moving of the St.Petersburg State University to Gatchina, all restored objects will repeat destiny of the real estate Gorny and will pass into private hands.
However, pockets of those who for some reason earned less last year or just head not the most prestigious higher education institution are not empty. Even those heads, who now earn less, still remain quite solvent persons. For example, rector of the HSE Yaroslav Kuzminov despite fall of the annual earnings from 45,3 million rubles in 2014 to 27,8 million rubles last year remains one of the most solvent rectors of the country. And even rector of the Moscow State Pedagogical University Aleksey Semenov, contrary to steady unwillingness of yesterday's school students tie itself with pedagogics, could earn 9,3 million rubles only for last year. Rectors of regional and regional higher education institutions earn much less, but they remain the same magnates from education in the region.
It is possible to explain, of course, all this income with rough scientific activities. Rector of any higher education institution of the country can really brag of his impressive list of articles and monographs. But how then explain the low income of teachers of the same educational institutions combining lecturing with writing of textbooks of methodics, articles and etc.? Here we can only apply the saying: “Study, student: who does not works – eats”.
The Legal Initiative researcher Saida Sirazhudinova at the All-Russian Civil Forum asked the representative of the mufti of Chechnya about the "honor killings" in Caucasus. And soon after that, she found herself under surveillance.
