Criminal case initiated against employees of Krasnoyarsk Ministry of Forestry because of forest fires in Siberia
The officials were suspected of negligence, which resulted in the growth of fire-ridden squares.
Investigators of the Krasnoyarsk Region initiated a criminal case of negligence (part 1.1 of Article 293 CCRF) against officials of the regional Ministry of Forestry. According to the investigators, the suspects’ inaction resulted in an increase in the area covered by fire. Over the week, it increased by 60% and reached 3 million hectares.
“According to the investigation’s preliminary version, from March 22 to August 1, 2019, officials of the Ministry of Forestry of the Krasnoyarsk Region did not take measures aimed at eliminating the forest fires, and therefore the fires spread to large areas,” the regional ICR’s Directorate reported.
Identities of the suspects have not yet been established. Security forces conduct searches at the regional Ministry of Forestry, the regional administration of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia and the KGAU “Forest Fire Center”.
In the Irkutsk Region, the Krasnoyarsk Region, the Republic of Yakutia and in one municipal district of Buryatia, an emergency situation was introduced, and a special fire prevention regime in 42 regions of Russia. Smoke from Siberian fires reached the USA and Canada.
American President Donald Trump offered Russia help in the fight against the fire. Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked Trump for his attention and promised to accept the offer if necessary. According to Vladimir Solovyov, head of the department for international activities of the Emergencies Ministry, “a powerful air group has been created to fight the fires.”
