Chechens stoned Georgian special forces

Clashes between the inhabitants of the Pankisi Gorge and the security forces of Georgia were videotaped.

A video of the clashes between the Georgian police and the Chechen population of the Pankisi Gorge was published online, Interfax reports.

Chechens protested against the construction of the Khadori-3 HPP, which was planned to be erected on the Alazani River. The situation escalated after the introduction of additional forces of the police special forces.

On April 21, new units of the MIA of the country appeared in the region. The protesters started throwing stones at the security services, and they used tear gas and rubber bullets.

As a result of the collision there are victims on both sides. Employees of the special forces are hospitalized, and medical assistance is provided to Chechens on the spot.

Lenta.ru writes that at the moment the situation is the following: the special forces retreated, and the protesters collect stones for defense.

It is worth noting that the representatives of the protests went to Telavi for talks with representatives of the authorities, but at that time residents of the Pankisi Gorge set fire to construction equipment and armored personnel carriers of the MIA, throwing Molotov cocktails at them.

The Khadori-3 HPP in Pankisi should be erected in a year – its capacity will be 5.4 megawatts.

Activists are confident that the construction is detrimental to the ecology of the gorge. Their position is to prevent the construction of the power plant. Yesterday the representatives of the Georgian government were in Pankisi and promised to resolve all disputed issues, but construction has begun anyway.
