Chechen government head banned from entering US because of torture allegations

The State Department called on the Russian authorities to bring to justice the officials of the republic, who were involved in human rights violations.

The United States banned the head of the Chechen government, Muslim Khuchiev, and his wife Sapiyat Shabazova, from entering the US and called on the Russian authorities to hold the official accountable for human rights violations, including torture, kidnapping, executions and illegal arrests, the message on the website of the US State Department reads.

Khuchiev started working for the republican government in June 2018 after holding the post of mayor of Grozny for about three years. According to the director of the MUP Teplosnabzheniye Lom-Ali Elbiyev, in the summer of 2017 he was beaten with batons and tortured with stun guns in the City Hall on Khuchiev’s orders. As a result, Elbiyev was allegedly forced to confess to embezzling 28 million rubles ($ 436,000).
