Case of torture in Yaroslavl prison investigated by colony staff’s kin
The Deputy Prosecutor for monitoring compliance with the law in correctional institutions surnamed Mikhaylov is a relative of the Deputy Head of the colony, Igit Mikhaylov.
The case of torture in correctional colony-1 of Yaroslavl is being investigated by relatives of the colony's employees, Irina Biryukova, the lawyer with Public Verdict Foundation, said. The foundation has published a press release about this.
According to Biryukova, the investigation is also being carried out by a relative of colony employee Sipan Mamayan, who was identified on video showing the torture of Yevgeny Makarov. Also, the Deputy Prosecutor for monitoring compliance with the law in correctional institutions, Mikhailov, has family ties to the Deputy Head of the colony, Igit Mikhailov.
The foundation believes that family ties between investigators and correctional colony-1 staff account for the fact that complaints of torture in the colony have not been investigated since 2017. Biryukova asked the Investigative Committee of Russia to withdraw the case from Yaroslavl for its investigation in Moscow.
Lawyer Irina Biryukova passed the video with torture in Yaroslavl correctional colony-1 to Novaya Gazeta. The next day she fled Russia due to threats from the colony staff.
