Case of kidnapping and torturing of Krasnodar businessman by FSB officers terminated
The investigation has come to the conclusion that the entrepreneur had been simply brought in for questioning.
The Investigative Committee of the Krasnodar region has terminated the criminal case of kidnapping of local entrepreneur Aram Gambaryan. This is reported by Komitet Protiv Pytok ('Committee against Torture').
According to the organization, the investigators came to the conclusion that nobody had kidnapped Gambaryan; he had been simply brought in for questioning as a witness in the case of an attempt at another local businessman. Then, according to the investigation, the entrepreneur was released; already the next morning, he was detained for “unaddressed and causeless crude obscene language” in a public place (Art. 20.1 of the Russian Code of Administrative Offenses) and brought to the isolation ward.
Previously, The CrimeRussia already reported on Gambaryan’s abduction. According to him, on March 21, 2017, his car was blocked by masked men; shouting “it's the FSB at work,” they dragged him into their car. He was taken to the woods, getting beaten along the way. The abuse and tortures continued in a pit dug in advance; Gambaryan was stripped naked, tortured with a taser, poured water over his body, and threatened with murder. Several times, a gun was brought to his temple and shots were made by the ear.
Siloviki demanded that he give a statement in the case of the attempt at the local entrepreneur Mindiya Gulua, who is considered to be the main lobbyist for the interests of thief in law Merab Dzhangveladze. The attempt was made last summer. Gulua’s car was riddled in the Yubileyny micro-district of Krasnodar. The entrepreneur was wounded but survived the attack.
Soon, a local resident Eduard Kesheshyan, who used to be Gulua’s friend, was arrested on suspicion of executing the assassination attempt. It is noteworthy that the detainee was a disabled person of the first group and could only move with a cane. Nevertheless, the investigation deemed him an assassin. Gambaryan was his friend and brought him goods to the pre-trial detention center.
After the torture in the woods, Gambaryan was brought to the police department in Krasnodar, where he signed all the papers he was given. The following day, the Seversky Court of the Krasnodar region arrested him for 10 days allegedly for violating the public order.
All this time, Gambaryan has been in poor condition in the pre-trial detention center. First, an ambulance was called, and then he was hospitalized in intensive care with numerous injuries, concussion, and closed craniocerebral trauma.
Over a year, investigators have refused to initiate a case of kidnapping and tortures eight times; but in April 2018, they did initiate a case of exceeding official powers with the use of violence (item ‘a’ part 3 of Art. 286 of the Russian Criminal Code). Now it has been terminated.
