Bashkiria: deputy steals sand worth $157k
According to the investigation, the people’s choice organized illegal production of a sand and gravel mixture.
A deputy of the Sterlitamak district of the Republic of Bashkortostan has been detained on suspicion of organizing illegal mining of minerals. A criminal case under two articles – Illegal Enterprise and Embezzlement on an Especially Large Scale – has been initiated against him. His home and office have been searched as part of the investigation. Offices of two heads of the local police department who might have protected the illegal business, have also been checked.
The investigators found out that in the spring of 2016, the deputy’s daughter rented a plot of land, on which the man decided to organize illegal extraction of sand and gravel mixture. He would sell the extracted minerals to various construction firms. The damage from his actions to the state amounted to 10 million rubles ($157 thousand).
Initially, the defendants in the case had been charged with embezzlement through swindling in the amount of 225 million rubles ($3.3 million). In the final version of the indictment, the article was changed to 1.5-billion-ruble ($22.45 million) embezzlement.
