American Paul Whelan apprehended for espionage spoke about threats by FSB captain
The American was trying to ask for recusal of a representative of the security services.
A hearing at Lefortovsky court of Moscow saw US citizen Paul Whelan, arrested for spying, arguing that FSB captain Alexey Khizhnyak, who was leading his case, threatened him.
“I request that FSB captain, investigator Alexey Khizhnyak, be recused - he insults my dignity and threatens my life,” - TASS cites Whelan as saying.
In response, the judge stated that the removal could be submitted only in relation to a judge or prosecutor, but not an investigator.
The FSB reported on the detention of the American in Moscow on December 31, 2018. The intelligence service did not disclose the details, stating only that Whelan was charged with espionage. The prisoner’s brother, in turn, told CNN that Paul had come to Moscow for the wedding of his friends.
General’s son Mikhail Sal’nikov, Professor of the Department of Theory of Government and Law at the St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Russian Federation, has been detained for real estate fraud. Amid other corruption crimes hitting the headlines, this offense does not seem a high-profile one. But the point is that this is not the first criminal case instituted against professor Sal’nikov, and he is not the only relative of MIA general Viktor Sal’nikov having problems with the law.
