Businessman Valery Pshenichny, who was found dead in the SIZO-4 of St. Petersburg and accused of embezzlement in the design of the Varshavyanka submarine, was tortured and raped in an isolation ward, Novaya Gazeta reported.
According to the results of the forensic medical examination, Pshenichny was raped before his death. At the same time, as the study showed, this was done not by the employees of the SIZO, but "someone from outside". Also there were found traces of electric shocks, cut and chopped wounds on his body. The spine of the deceased was broken. In Pshenichny's mouth there were found traces of electric shocks, presumably, made by a cord of the immersion heater.
According to Novaya Gazeta, Pshenichny was in the cell of the detention center along with three other prisoners. On the afternoon of February 5, two of them were taken to investigative activities, and the third - to a meeting with a lawyer. According to the CCTV footage, after 15 minutes the businessman was taken out of the cell. He did not leave the SIZO building, but it is not known where he was and when he returned to the cell. About 16 o'clock on February 5, the escort returned one of Pshenichny's neighbors to the ward, who discovered the body.
According to the officers of the SIZO, Pshenichny hanged himself on a drawstring from the hood of the sweatshirt. The guards also said that before that he had attempted to commit suicide using an arch support, taken out of the sneakers, and a cord of the immersion heater.
Valery Pshenichny was arrested on January 18, 2018 by the decision of the Oktyabrsky District Court of St. Petersburg. The investigation believes that together with Deputy Chief Engineer of Admiralteyskie Verfi JSC Gleb Emelchenkov he stole not less than 100 million rubles ($1.6m), unreasonably inflating the cost of the contract for the design of the Varshavyanka submarine. Novaya Gazeta reports that in 2016, director of the owned NovIT Pro wheat company Andrey Petrov was arrested within the same case. In the prison, Petrov gave a testimony against Pshenichny and Emelchenkov. After that, they were arrested, and Petrov was released.
Lawyers of Oleg Korshunov, who is charged with a large fraud in organizing the production of footwear for prisoners, do not see corpus delicti in his case. The prisoners did get their shoes, and the difference in the cost of footwear made from leather and split leather is about 10%.
