According to sources of The CrimeRussia, the prisoner was trying to take his own life in the cell of the detention center.

Deputy Head of Spetsstroy Alexander Zagorulko, suspected of a multi-million dollar theft of public funds allocated for the construction of the Defense Ministry facilities, was trying to take his own life in the pre-trial detention center (SIZO). As two sources of The CrimeRussia reported, Zagorulko was found when trying to hang himself in the cell of the detention center last week. Obviously, so far people have tried to hide what has happened from the general public.

As The CrimeRussia has previously reported, former First Deputy Director of the Federal Agency for Special Construction Alexander Zagorulko was arrested in November 2016. Zagorulko together with another ex-Deputy Director of Spetsstroy Alexander Buryakov and a number of contractors were defendants in the case of Swindling on an especially large scale (part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code), associated with large-scale embezzlement of funds from the public fund during the construction and reconstruction of the facilities of the Ministry of Defense. According to the investigation, the amount of theft amounted to 450 million rubles ($7.8m). The First Deputy Head of Spetsstroy refused to confess to the theft he had committed.

In February of this year Buryakov concluded a deal with the investigation, as a result of which his former colleague Zagorulko was charged with new articles. Thus, Buryakov said that the First Deputy Head of Spetsstroy received payoffs for signing major contracts with contractors. As a result of the new testimony, the Main Military Investigative Directorate initiated proceedings against Alexander Zagorulko under part 6 of Art. 290 of the Criminal Code (Bribe-Taking on an especially large scale). As for Alexander Buryakov, the military investigation succeeded in transferring the defendant of the case from the prison under house arrest. Lawyers of Zagorulko also repeatedly petitioned to change the client's preventive punishment to a softer one. The defense pointed to the health problems of the accused – in January 2017 Zagorulko suffered a myocardial infarction and underwent treatment in Matrosskaya Tishina prison hospital.

It is worth mentioning that for the last month this is the second high-profile incident in Moscow prisons. Earlier, Executive Director of Roscosmos state corporation Vladimir Evdokimov was found dead in detention center №5. The body of the detainee was found at around 4 am on March, 18 in the toilet room of the cell, the door of which was locked from the inside. Doctors noticed knife wounds in the heart on his body. Later the Investigative Committee, called the incident a murder and announced the beginning of interrogation of cellmates of Roscosmos top manager. Evdokimov was accused of a major swindling for 200 million rubles within the organized crime group. He was arrested in Moscow in December last year.
