Shaimiev was president of Tatarstan between 1991 and 2010, after which he became the republic’s state advisor.

Sakina Shaimieva, the wife of the first president of the Republic of Tatarstan, Mintimer Shaimiev, died at the age of 80, Tatar-inform reported with reference to Tatarstan’s press service head, Eduard Khairullin.

The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, voiced his condolences about Shaimieva’s death.

Mintimer and Sakina got married in 1961 and lived together for 57 years. In 2007, Sakina Shaimieva's book Mintimer’s Shadow was published and then reprinted with additions in 2016.

Shaimiev was president of Tatarstan between 1991 and 2010, after which he became the republic’s state advisor.
