Smart cameras with facial recognition to be installed in Moscow
The software package has already helped catch a criminal in the metro.
A facial recognition system will be installed on the streets of Moscow in order to combat crime. Such a system has already been implemented in the metro and helped to identify a person wanted for a major fraud. Today, 167 thousand cameras are installed in public places of the Russian capital, city mayor Sergey Sobyanin told in his blog.
“A facial recognition system to search for criminals has already been implemented in the metro, and this year it will appear on the outdoor cameras. And it will be cool: the criminals will stay away from Moscow, here, they can no longer hide,” Sobyanin wrote.
In order to introduce the new software package, the old cameras will be replaced by modern ones with the best resolution. In 2019, it is planned to increase the number of such cameras to 105,000, which will cost the city, according to estimates by the head of the information technology department, Eduard Lysenko, at 600 million rubles ($ 9 million).
Seventeen Russian Governors are facing criminal prosecution for bribe-taking. The rest of them may be jailed any time for exceedance of official powers. At least, Nezygar (@russica2) Telegram channel claims so citing an unidentified source in the law enforcement structures. However, according to that source, it is currently prohibited to prosecute top-level officials. In 2018, the operatives had only searched offices of Vice Governors or Deputy Ministers – not their bosses. The CrimeRussia found out what supreme functionaries are on the hook of the law enforcement authorities and may be immediately indicted if the President orders so.
