Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs estimates damage from corruption in Russia at $ 1,6 billion

The number of detected corruption crimes since the beginning of the year increased by 4.7%.

For the eight months of 2019, 18,400 corruption crimes were detected in Russia, of which 5,500 were committed on a large and especially large scale. The total damage in the completed criminal cases of this category amounted to about 102 billion rubles ($ 1,6 billion). This was sounded in an interview with the publication Police of Russia by the deputy head of the department for combating offenses in the distribution and use of budgetary funds of MIA’s Anti-Corruption Department, Dmitry Sevastyanov.

According to him, the number of detected corruption crimes since the beginning of the year has increased by 4.7%. The investigation of more than 15,000 crimes has been completed, about 6,500 thousand people have been prosecuted. In January-August, more than 3,000 crimes committed by officials convicted of bribery were discovered. The property and money worth 1.5 billion rubles ($ 23,5 million) were confiscated.

Sevastyanov added that corruption remains one of the key factors that have a “devastating effect on the effectiveness of public authorities and their managerial decisions.”

In 2018, Russia lost several positions in the Corruption Perception Index and was ranked the 138th out of 180 countries, scoring the same number of points – 28 out of 100 – with Papua New Guinea, Lebanon, Iran, Guinea, and Mexico.

Last year, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the average size of a bribe in Russia exceeded 600,000 rubles ($ 9,400). One-third of Russian businessmen faced extortion of bribes.
