Putin: hundreds of millions being stolen in construction of Vostochny cosmodrome
Putin says we did not manage to clean up the mess in construction, despite tens of criminal cases and arrests.
“Hundreds of millions” (rubles - ed. Note) are being stolen in construction of the Vostochny Cosmodrome. This forceful statement has been expressed by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin on Monday during the meeting of of Russia’s government. Putin says we did not manage to clean up the mess in construction, despite tens of criminal cases and arrests, reports TASS. “It’s been told hundreds of times: work transparently! We allocate a powerful lot of money. The project is a national-level one. No, they steal in hundreds of millions,” Putin resented.
In late October, head of Roskosmos Dmitry Rogozin promise to visit the Vostochny Cosmodrome every month with inspection. The second stage of construction of the cosmodrome implies erection of supporting facilities for heavy carrier vehicles Angara A5 and related infrastructure. Facilities of the first stage - including supporting facilities for Soyuz-2 missiles and related infrastructure - had earlier been erected at the Vostochny Cosmodrome. Starting from April, 2016, five launches of Soyuz-2 missiles have been made. With that, construction completion date was moved up a few times. In early 2019, vice premier Yury Borisov admitted that they would not be able to complete the construction by 2021, as it had been planned. Borisov said the deadline would be 2023 and noted that it would be inadmissible to go beyond. The vice premier said the break of the deadline had been caused by a mess with contractors.
A year ago, the Prosecutor-General’s Office reported that the damage from the violations at the cosmodrome is 10 billion rubles ($156 million). More than 140 criminal cases have been initiated. More than 17 thousand violations related to corruption and cost-inefficiency were determined at the Vostochny Cosmodrome.
