Prime Minister of Tatarstan Ildar Khalikov resigns over Tatfondbank case
Ildar Khalikov

Deceived clients of the financial institution believe that "because of his lack of professionalism" he failed to help the situation in the bank, and moreover that he might have covered the scammers.

The President of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, complied with the appeal of the head of the Republic Ildar Khalikov to release him from office at his own request.

According to official information, the decision of the ex-Head of the Government is now related to his desire to switch to another job. Ildar Khalikov has already been appointed as the CEO of JSC Upravlyayushaya Kompaniya Tatenergo (Tatenergo Managing Company).

The duties of the prime minister of the Republic will be performed by his first deputy Alexey Pesoshin.

By the way, earlier, Khalikov also headed the board of directors of Tatfondbank.

Analysts and experts attribute the resignation of the official to the difficult situation around the financial institution.

We should remind that earlier residents of the Republic posted a petition on change.org demanding Khalikov’s resignation. The deceived clients of Tatfondbank, who still cannot get their money back, believe that the Prime Minister was aware of the thefts in the bank and knew about the upcoming revocation of its license, but "because of his lack of professionalism" failed to help the situation in the bank, and moreover that he might have covered the scammers.

Khalikov himself commented on his resignation to Business Online.

"Of course, I feel, among other things, responsible for the situation," Khalikov said. "And probably, many will think that my resignation has been triggered by the recent events. But I will not lie: the decision was taken a long time ago. The incident only delayed my leaving, as we tried to do everything possible to prevent the collapse of Tatfondbank. This resignation is entirely on my own will. If it wasn’t for this situation, I would have gone before the New Year. There is a reason behind the popular belief that every 5 to 7 years you must change the filed of work. And I have been working as prime minister for 7 years. In any case, I’m staying in Tatarstan", Khalikov told the publication.

We should remind that the Central Bank revoked the licenses of Tatfondbank and Intekhbank on March 3 for violation of CBR standards. On the same day, Tatfondbank board head Robert Musin was arrested on charges of fraud. The criminal case on theft in Tatfondbank was initiated in February. As part of its investigation, police detained deputy chairmen of Tatfondbank Sergey Meshchanov and Vadim Merzlyakov, head of TFB Finans Timur Valshin and his subordinates Rustam Timerbaev and Ilnar Abdulmanov.
