Ministry of Health calls possible reason for growth of drinkers in Russia
In late April, the Ministry reported a two-fold drop in alcohol consumption.
The Ministry of Health became interested in the study on the number of Russians who do not drink alcohol, whose number dropped from 40% to 33%. The reason for this, the ministry assumed, may be the freezing of excise on alcohol in 2018-2019, which affected the final price of products, the press service said.
“The second study already shows an increase in the frequency of alcohol consumption by Russians in recent times. All this may be the result of freezing excise taxes on alcohol products in 2018–2019, when excise taxes did not rise, which means their real value decreased by the level of inflation,” the Ministry of Health explained.
The final conclusions can be drawn when the results of studies on the number of diseases and deaths associated with alcohol are known, the Ministry noted. At the same time, at the end of April, the Ministry of Health reported a twofold drop in such consumption in seven years: from 18 liters per capita in 2011 to 9.3 liters in 2018.
