Gazprom appeals court decision to write off $ 136 million of debts of Chechnya residents
The company filed an appeal; in total, the republic has not paid more than $ 241 million.
Lawyers of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Grozny filed an appeal against the decision of the Grozny’s Zavodskoy District Court which earlier decided to write off Chechen residents’ gas debts worth 9.4 billion rubles ($ 142 million) due to their hopelessness. In total, as of the data on December 2018, the republic owes 16.161 billion rubles ($ 244 million).
“The company has exercised its right to appeal in accordance with the current legislation,” Gazprom said.
The debts that the court ordered to write off accumulated for the period from January 1, 2007 to September 30, 2015. After the decision, a number of regions followed the example of Chechnya and appealed to the prosecutor’s office to write off the similar debts for which the statutes of limitation had expired.
Vyacheslav Abroskin believes that the influence of criminal leaders extends from control over the collection of money obtained by criminal means to control in the field of energy and natural resources extraction.
