Former United States Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul called the appointment of actor Steven Seagal a special representative on US-Russian humanitarian ties “desperate.” "Is Seagal a Russian citizen now? This will be 'interesting'," he tweeted.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on the appointment of Mr. Seagal on August 4. He is the special representative for Russian-US humanitarian ties. The role is meant to deepen cultural, art, and youth ties between the two countries. Seagal said, “I’ve always had a very strong desire to do all I can to help improve Russian-American relations. I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially, and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially.”
