RAS academician arrested on charges of embezzling more than billion rubles in public procurement
The scientist wrote to Putin about the illegal seizure of the clinic, which he headed for about 20 years.
A court in Novosibirsk arrested the former director of the National Medical Research Center (NMITS) of the Ministry of Health named after Academician Meshalkin 60-year-old Aleksandr Karaskov, who was accused by the investigation of embezzling 1.35 billion rubles ($20.9mln) in public procurement and money laundering, Kommersant reports. Prior to his arrest, Karaskov published an open letter on the Internet to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he linked his criminal prosecution with the raider seizure of the clinic.
“I haven’t read such a crap for a long time,” said Karaskov about the materials of the criminal case.
According to the academician, "unverified data from the Internet about the profits of the suppliers of the NMITS" became the pretext for initiating the case.
About a week ago, the court sent the spouse of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Irina Boytsova to the jail; she was the deputy head of the NMITS. Spouses were detained on June 3 as members of an organized criminal group. According to investigators, the the organized criminal group committed theft in the organization of the procurement of drugs and medical devices. Karaskov was arrested later than his wife, because after his arrest a heart attack sent the pensioner to intensive care.
In February 2019, in the framework of a criminal case on embezzlement on public procurement, the deputy director of the NMITS for Scientific Research – cardiac surgeon Yevgeny Pokushalov, heads of supplier companies Aleksey Tretyakov, Yevgeny Pervushin and Aleksandr Sorokin were detained.
