Police launch investigation into theft of subsidy for Cinema Foundation allocated for VMayakovsky movie
Aleksandr Sheyn, the husband of actress Chulpan Khamatova, shot the movie that was released in heathers in fall 2017. However, OOO Mayakovsky did not return the money to the Cinema Foundation as stipulated by their contract.
Moscow police launched a fraud investigation into the theft of 1 million rubles ($16 thousand) that the Cinema Foundation had allocated for the production of the VMayakovsky movie, TASS quoted its police source as saying. Police suspect “unidentified people from the OOO Mayakovsky management,” according to Izvestiya.
The investigation was launched following a prosecutorial inspection, according to the publication. The Cinema Foundation had filed a complaint against OOO Mayakovsky with the Basmanny district prosecutors. Prosecutors discovered violations and referred the case to the MIA Directorate in the Basmanny District, Moskovsky Komsomolets noted.
The Cinema Foundation allocated the money from the federal budget in the form of a subsidy to fund the production of the I am poet Vladimir Mayakovsky movie.
The Cinema Foundation and unidentified people from the OOO Mayakovsky management signed the subsidy allocation contract on June 2, 2015. OOO Mayakovsky was registered in 2012 and is completely owned by its CEO Sheyn, according to the SPARTAK database.
The movie was produced in fall 2017. However, OOO Mayakovsky did not return the money to the Cinema Foundation as stipulated by their contract.
Sheyn told RBC that the news that TASS reported regarding the fraud investigation was a hoax.
Meanwhile, the Cinema Foundation filed a lawsuit against OOO Mayakovsky with the Moscow Commercial Court in May 2018. The lawsuit alleged theft of more than 20 million rubles ($319 thousand).
The movie was released in theatres in November 2017, Sheyn was the producer. He also participated in the script development. Sheyn worked on the movie for five years, two of which he spent on the script development, according to Vokrug Kino. The initial movie budget was reduced down to 80 million ($1.2 million) rubles from 132 million rubles ($2.1 million).

The movie was shot in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and New York. The following actors starred in the movie: Chulpan Khamatova; Yury Kolokolnikov; Lyudmila Maksakova; Evgeny Mironov; Mikhail Efremov. The movie was shown at the grand opening of the TERRITORIYA International Modern Art Festival in fall 2017.
