Sergey Sheverda is accused of involvement in illegal logging in the Tukolon Nature Reserve.
ICR Directorate in the Irkutsk region has seized the property of Minister of Forestry Sergey Sheverda, who is accused of Exceeding Official Powers in the case of illegal logging in the Tukolon Nature Reserve. This is reported by the Committee's press service.
A Volkswagen Touareg 2013 worth about 1.5 million rubles ($23,880), as well as 80 thousand dollars and 2 million rubles ($31,840) found in a safe deposit box of one of the banks in Irkutsk have been seized.
The press service of the ICR Directorate in Irkutsk noted that the investigation against Sheverda is in its final stage.
Sergey Sheverda was detained on June 6. According to the investigation, aware of the lack of grounds for carrying out clear felling in the reserve, the minister did not terminate the contract of sale of forest plantations or stop illegal logging. The court has arrested him for two months. The damage from Sheverda’s actions is estimated at 748 million rubles ($11.9 million).
Governor of the Irkutsk region, Sergey Levchenko, suggested that the detention of the minister was related to the results of his work in the regional forest sector, and stopping the cuttings in the Tukolon harmed the forest even more.
