FSB investigator steals gold worth $345k from physical evidence
Gold nuggets weighing 1.5, 2.5 and 8 kg were replaced by less precious metals.
In the Magadan region, former FSB Mayor Konstantin Kostenko took advantage of his position and stole gold nuggets weighing 1.5, 2.5 and 8 kg worth 22.6 million rubles ($342,503), replacing them with less precious metals. According to the investigation, the swindling was committed in 2013-2015.
The physical evidence was related to criminal cases about the illegal circulation of precious metals, which were part of Kostenko’s proceedings. The former FSB officer is now a defendant under this article. In addition, a criminal case under Swindling on an Especially Large Scale has been initiated against him. Kostenko does not admit his guilt.
The ex-law enforcer has been placed in custody at the request of ICR investigators. The IC officers explained the decision about the arrest by the fact that while at large, the defendant may re-register his property, which he managed to buy with money obtained through criminal means. The Tikhookeansky Naval Military Court will pronounce the sentence.
Mass protest rallies have been taking place in Moscow on a regular basis since the beginning of this summer. People are protesting for lots of different reasons. However, the reaction of the law enforcement authorities is always the same: repression. What is the reason behind the brutality shown during the dispersion of mass rallies? A conscious intimidation policy or incompetence of law enforcement functionaries escalating the violence and unable to imagine the potential consequences of this?
